Melissa Mwai

Melissa H. Mwai is a picture book author-illustrator. Her middle initial stands for Hernández, representing her Afro-Puerto Rican heritage. Melissa wants underrepresented kids to see themselves in her stories from big adventures to small surprises.

She studied English at Colby College, Library Science at Long Island University, and works in education. When Melissa isn’t creating, she geeks out on superhero movies and musicals. She lives in Maryland with her husband, two kids, and bunny. Melissa gives a lot of hugs and besos. To her kids. And her husband. Not to the bunny.  Melissa is repped by Jacqui Lipton.

Fun Fact:  Her favorite word is quixotic, an adjective based on Don Quixote’s name. Unlike Don Quixote, Melissa has slayed giants—at least while playing D&D.
